At 5897 meters above sea level, and rising majestically above the Andean mountains, Cotopaxi is the highest active volcano in the world. With an almost perfectly symmetrical cone shape it makes Cotopaxi a picture book image of Ecuador.
Being high in the Andes is a really special feeling that has be to experienced. Ecuador is one of the few places in the world where it is possible to reach 5000m without years of climbing experience. A full day spent visiting the volcano. There is the possibility of hiking up to the snow line, visiting laguna Limpiopungo, a lake high in the andes at the foot of Cotopaxi or a possible horse ride in the afternoon in full chagra outfit (name commonly used for the cowboys of this region). A magnificent photographic panorama of peaks such as Cotopaxi , Sincholagua and Ruminahui. Along the route leading to the lake it’s possible to observe flocks of llamas and other species of mammals, especially rabbits and deer. It’s also possible to observe flora at altitude, which notably changes in ascendancy.
If you have future plans to climb Ecuador’s high volcanoes. In just one day it is possible to summit mountains such as: Guagua Pichincha, Pasochoa, El Corazon, Illinizas Norte, Atacazo. These serve as great acclimatization hikes if you are interested in attempting to summit mountains like Cotopaxi.
